Golfing in Cape Cod
Women will never understand men’s fascination for golf as men find women’s
preoccupation with their fingernails silly. Though, predominantly a male sport,
females are increasingly taking part in golf. As a person interested in cycling
will take the cycle off the car and start pedaling anywhere in the world with
equal enthusiasm as that of cycling in his own street, people who love golf
would prefer to play it even on board a ship if there is enough space to walk
just ten paces.
It is no wonder that Cape Cod being a region where tourists throng, has several
world class golf courses. Donald Ross, Geoffrey Cornish, Michael Hurdzan, Jack
Kidwell Henry Mitchell and Chi Chi Rodriguez design golf courses in Cape Cod.
Each town in Cape Cod like Hyannis, Brewster, Provincetown etc. has at least
one golf course, with a total of 55 plus golf courses. Champion regulation courses
to challenging par 3’s; golf courses in Cape Cod enthuse beginners and
challenge the scratch golfer. Cape Cod Amateur Golf and Cape Cod PGA Championship
tournaments are played in Cape Cod golf courses. Some of the Golf courses are
featured in the top 50 courses of Golf Digest.

‘Captains’ is a golf course in Brewster that pays homage to sea
faring captains from Cape Cod, who established trade links with other countries
and far off lands by naming each of the 36 holes in two courses after the names
of the captains.
Donald Ross using the beauty of Bass River as the backdrop designed Bass River
course in 1914. Ross designed the golf course creatively so that the front nine
has three par-3s and the back nine have three par-5s.
The Ballymeade golf club was redesigned by Chi Chi Rodriguez. This golf course
presents the player with a series of holes that is difficult to play and tests
player’s accuracy. ‘Stay and play’ packages are available
at many places.
Bayberry Hills golf course, West Yarmouth has a beautiful grass lay out measuring
6500 from the blue tees and 7000 yards from the gold tees. The Blue Rock designed
by Geoffrey Cornish is located close to the Bass River. The name ‘Blue
rock’ comes from a blue tinted marble rock that is found in the river.
Blue Rock was host to many Cape Cod tournaments. Golfers of all levels should
include Blue Rock in their playing itinerary. Because, first of all it sort
of warms up players. It challenges your skills by requiring the use of every
club in your bag and that’s good practice. Moreover, during off peak hours
it’s very affordable. And it takes a relatively short time - less than
three hours to play and, moreover it is conducive for beginners.
There are a number of golf schools in Cape Cod. Blue Rock is the foremost of
them with the latest in technology. Jane Frost golf school is another one that
imparts quality golf coaching. Jane Frost School has courses as short as two
hrs to half a day. Grand slam golf school, Brewster, has a very high rating
among golf schools. Hyannis golf course has golf schooling facility.
A typical golf game would cost $60 during peak hours. However, it is worth
the money.
